Hey Gibbo
I think it’s a great idea so long as you are going to charge people for the service. TAFE certificates in the music industry cost hundreds of dollars each and I hear nothing but complaints about them at the end of the day because they only teach the ‘theoretical’ music business. On top of that, record companies, agents, and managers aren’t taking on acts because they have a “Certificate II in the music industry”. Basically you can wipe your arse with it for all it gets you.
It should be kept real and sold on a ‘no guarantee’ basis. That is to say that, the course just provides you with the tools and practical skills to move ahead ASSUMING that you have the talent in the first place and are producing a product that people want. It answers the “where do we start?” question and nothing more.
I think you need to sit down and think about just what it takes to formulate a new act and get it off the ground and offer a series of short courses that address each phase of the process. If you want my help, I’m happy to give it IF you are looking at this as a commercial venture. What is locked in your brain is worth money. Don’t sell yourself or your experience short. You should make money from your work and knowledge.
Let me know if I can be of assistance with anything.
Cheers
Johno
G’Day Mark !! Was a good day at Mt Annan… apparently they loved us…but we knew that didn’t we ! The idea you have here is great. As for what would be my first quiestion …well. You know i do CD’s here for others. And always trying to improve on sound quality… my first quiestion would be ” whats your opinion of the CD quality” Getting a second unbiased opinion is always hard. And as you know has also lots to do with personal taste . I’ve been planning on an Instrumental CD for some time now …so yep i’m mighty interested in all of this. At present I’m doing a CD for someone that will be going everywhere overseas i expect it wont be finished till end of year .. so i need to be sure the standard is high..Thanks Mate, Catch up soon..Harry

Mark,
Gripes this sent shivers down my spine and I think that had to do with being an ex-teacher: well, still am when it comes to the band Girl Vs Ghost.
Let me explain a little about this band. It came out of three schools in Ballarat and all but one of the members was doing music and/or VET Music Industry Skills. The drummer put the bands first demo together because he was doing production, the keyboard player did the graphics because she was doing Art, the bass player took care of computers because he is a computer nerd, the lead guitarist was into merchandising because he was doing small business in VCE and the vocalist was the one not doing music.
Yet, the kids did not have the knowledge about how to style the band, where to go for gigs, and so on. Of course, this is where my partner and I came in by he;ping with the legals and working on style. This does not mean that all issues are solved or have adequately been dealt with. One area which I noted needed work was the press kit and I have been helping other young bands in Ballarat work on that particular aspect as well. Of course, money for young kids is always an issue so trying to get value for money is another aspect that needs to looked at” ‘bang for the buck’.
What I think you are aiming at here, especially via the video instructions, programme learning according to needs (plan). There is an educational theory to support such a approach but you must identify the needs because not everyone will learn in the same way.
So getting down to it: yes it an excellent idea which you should flesh out more. If you need help please do not hestitate to contact me, as the teacher thing maybe of assistance.
Cheers n peace
Allen
Thanks for your thoughts Johno. It absolutely will be a commercial venture. As I mentioned in the video, there will be a few folks who will get in for free at the beginning to test it out but the idea is that you will be charged to participate.
The problem with TAFE and so on are because they have too many subjects and don’t have the time or expertise to go into them thoroughly enough. I plan to offer a very small and very specific range of topics and to cover them very thoroughly. The list of topics will obviously grow over time but to start with it will be small.
Thanks for your kind words and your offer of help. I’d love to have you along. Drop me an email if you’ve got anything specific in mind.
Keep your eye on this site for updates and pass the link around to your muso friends. I’d like as much feedback as I can get.
Cheers, Gibbo
Hi Harry, thanks for your comments. The Mt Annan gig was fun. I’m glad the people liked it.
You are right about sound being a matter of taste. Maybe you need to be asking a wider audience? What if you did a bit of marketing via a website to find a core group of “fans”. You could do some pre-release demo’s for the core group occasionally and survey their opinion. This would allow you to alter the mix or adjust your “sound” throughout the process so by the time the public gets it, it’s been tested. Just a thought!
Thanks for dropping by. Cheers, Mark
Hey Dude,
Don’t know if I missed the others saying it as I was reading at a flash, but the elegance of your proposal is what caught me most. The flow, the rate of flow, the simplicity of explanation and the basic production simplicity. “Applause”
As for the IDEA, if you deliver the goods in the same style, and /or, video, as you mentioned, you could single handedly teach the world to wipe its bum correctly. You never stop amazing me with your simple mind, (no slag intended), you have a knack of the art of “KISS” and you see the “thick Head” in the rest of us. I don’t know how one goes about making the internet make money for them, but if you can put this idea in the market place I think you should make a quid, at least.
As always, You have my assistance in any way you seem fit to use it. And as for where to start, I think where you can take them will determine where to start.
Like that sound desk operating course we ran, we new that would take those students to a practical level but not to Sound Engineer status. You need to know how far each branch of this tree can go, eg. you can’t guarantee a recording contract, but can show how best to work towards one. You can’t guarantee Gigs, unless you partner up with a venue or agent. I would start with the branch of the tree that you can take the farthest,
like example only, Bands putting one together, rehearsal regime, The package, the Marketing……………..the Gig…..on & up. Hope this helps, if not lets fight it out, I miss the verbals, you, Greg, Ed and Me. Hugs & Kisses BoB
P.S. Dude I know you can take a web design from go to whoa so that Branch gives a start point and an on going, but “finish” point when the site is up and running. Of course there is on gowing site growth, but job is at least accomplished.
I see some of the other ideas as having the start point as merely the tip of an iceburg like the Titanic Killer. I’n essited!!!
Hi there,
Love the concept! My partner and I form the band “Pacha Mamma” and have myspace and page on triplejunearthed, roots page. We have been performing around Queensland at pubs and festivals for the last 18 months.
We love the music side of the business, but struggle with the business side and we would be very intersted in helping you launch your courses, and recieving some tuition.
I would first like to see an overview of the course content, then instruction about web site construction, marketing and networking in the music industry. Would there be any formal certification, would you be a RTO?
I am a yoga teacher/therapist/trainer when I am not playing music, and would love to stay in touch about your whole concept. Not only for the music industry but for music in health/community.
Wishing you all the best,
Jan Keogh
Hey Gibbo,
like you mate the jury is still out as to how it would go. so many ventures into the
realms of internet ,software etc can look great but just die out. it would take a
fair bit of your time to get up and runnig and unless you are really enjoying it you
would need some kind of reimbursement or you will loose interest.
Anyway, I love the way your thinking and it would help a lot of people who don’t know what to do or can’t afford to pay heaps to have it done .
You sure have helped us bunch of Knuckleheads. Anything you want to do to set
a sample with our site is fine by me,would love to get together sometime to
share some ideas.
That’s enough garble from me, what I want to say is
THANKS!THANKS!THANKS.
Champ
Still thinking what the first thing to do would be. I am someone who loves the live side of music, so maybe recording or making a DVD info would be cool.
Cheers

Hi Mark,
From my experience in the music business the biggest obstacles to attaining any success are (1) generating a sufficient profile to attract the interest of booking agents. If you are not known either personally or by reputation gained from any form of exposure and fan feedback, your lovely promo material goes into the agent’s circular filing cabinet. (2) Knowing how to do that initial promotion and having the time and energy to do it. I wouldn’t start with how to make a flashy bio etc etc, I’d start with how do you do BASIC marketing exposure.
I love your music ideas.
I would like to talk with you. Where are you located ?
What is your phone # ?

Hey Mark, It’s Brendan from R&B here.
I can’t actually see anything in the box other than a big black box… is there supposed to be a video or a picture there or something? Not to worry. I read the comments and your responses and from them i’m pretty sure i got the jist of what it’s about –> Your creating an info site type thing to help bands/muso’s get educated on the business side of the music industry yeah? If this is the case, then i think it’s a top idea! I spent 2 years at uni studying the very sordid inner workings of the monster that is the music business, and i tell you what if i could have got answers to all my questions and learned everything i needed to know from a website such as your proposed one, then i certainly wouldn’t have spent 2 years and a small fortune (for a muso anyways) going to uni! But what’s done is done… i now have an advanced diploma in music business management and i’d be happy to help you out with any of the knowledge i have. I’d reckon you’d probably know just as much as what i do having worked in the industry for probably longer than i’ve been alive, and i have very little ‘real world’ experience (only that of the band i play in), but if i can help at all i’d be more than happy to contribute to such a worthwhile project. You know where to get a hold of me anyways!
I really hope your project gets going!
Regards,
Brendan…
Wonderful idea and terrific delivery. I would be very interested in being involved if this is still going forward. I am an attorney who dabbles in the music business as a side project helping out some long time friends who are musicians. They are the classic “have what it takes” “if they’d only get noticed”. Airplay and how to get it and keep it would be most important to me at this point as we’ve got the bio, the one sheet, the pro photos and music….it’s just a matter of getting it out to the masses more effectively and efficiently. The next thing I would like to learn more about from the musicians perspective (as I am NOT one!) is the legal aspects of the music business and how to protect yourself as an artist from bad contracts, whether they be booking contracts all the way to record deals, but in a simple dumbed down standpoint that anyone can understand and remember, and easily apply.
mailing list would be a priority for me…………
Hi Mark,
I think the idea is very good indeed. In answer to your question “What would I like to do first?”, I would like to have good advice on how to setup content and manage online user groups like MySpace, Hyves, Facebook etc., including the establishment and maintenance of blogs.
As a believer in the notion that a good product is 70% of the battle, and being a long-time worker in advertising and communications, I have most of the skills and insights that are needed for PR, intro letters, packaging etc., and a fairly good strategic mind to guide the approach - what I really miss is confidence and knowledge in installing and maintaining materials amongst user-group-communities.
Thanks for the trouble you’ve taken to get in touch, congratulations on formulating a useful and potentially powerful idea, and the best of luck for the future.

NO WEB SITE YET . Your idea is great and keep it going . because in your heart you want to do it. just start on one little step and climb. I am 50 years old and I spent half my life as a full time musician . Then i got married and family etc as i need to get involved in as a contractor some 25 years ago. Well NOW after seeing friends who didn;t stop it hit me in the heart. just like your idea. i went afer my goal this is i was all rusted out trombone player bass maun inst, singing ok but the rust is off. drums ok ryt gut ok. Now i did a liitle christmas song very basic too easy as it should have been held back but like your idea i went for it . google Billy Madle and Bill Madle both me well i went and bought some recording gear and still buying now one and one half years later i learned pro tools good enough in detail use all waves plug in and etc now getting some outboard gear etc. an idea in my heart of my real inner self i am attempting what most people wouldnt. i know im not going to be a star. but now check it out sunday night 9 to midnight on web 943WILW.com. i am on the radio yes i ran into the dj one year ago and my good old kids song got more air play that ever and it really was just to do something in recording song really basic .but now i did two songs on the sunday night dance party live show from wildwood nj. my friends who well check out Reps music. Jerry Ross production old time big name producer well has my old drummer and yes chris leggerie can sing. well reps music group click on the cds and chris campbell will appear or look at other cds to check out on reps music. Now like you i took another step i am now redoing my few songs with chris and so call consulting by Jerry Ross well to my friends etc i have a person who they eill never get . Check out jerry ross sometime. My love for music as you love for what you feel IS gonna happen for you if you keep with it. As for my next following cd will be a total JERRY ROSS PRODUCTION for my dream. stc. i know im not going on the road and leaving my family but i have a ney jersey station in the palm of my hand and am even trying to get on there other up to date station ass it will take me 1 or two years for that. but an idea if you follow it and keep with it i bet you you will win. Your website and you vidio is great and interesting. My choice would be website as i would even like to keep in touch with you i wont tie you up with lg email like this but i was explaining myself to you and each little tiny step is taking another step. I am even gonna get a nice web site so i can put a couple of my regular music was over that little christmas song. and when i finish my cd i want to post it on there and cd baby but i need my own web site. you can email me when ever.dont give up because someday you may see somebody who did make it happen out of something you once thought of. I think web sites with musical style is in demand. maybe few main cover pages to pick from etc. too many people in the world and to start off i reall dont think too many may cross same cover page and well it would have there name on it anyway. well you have me interested in you attempt to make it happen please keep me posted. I will be on my own musical steps how far i can talk my music as i dont expect to make money from it unless something happens from me being on the radio. so far 27 show meaning on day a week but 27 times two on each show now. my funky beat and dancing machine in my heart like dance pop music horns etc well keep in touch and don’t stop.Best of luck Bill Madle<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
